In the fifth week of our First Year Seminar we learned about love letters. I found this really fascinating. On the first day class this week we listened a podcast called “In Between the Lines” by Barbara Harrison and Andrew Carroll. Based off the book “In between the Lines” by Andrew Carroll. I think I was a really fun way of learning about the love letters that were sent from all over. We took notes in class and my favorite letters were sent between the couple Norma and Harry. Norma had written Harry and letter that included her picture, and directly after he had seen her picture wrote a letter write back. Then on June 27th, after 4 letters Harry asks Norma for her hand in marriage. She sent back a letter with her answer of yes. He writes a final letter to her before he has to go to war. He lets her know there will be a period of time that the letters stop. After he returns from the war the first thing he does is write to her. Then a few weeks go by and he writes to her again letting her know he will be coming home. They continue to write to one another until the very moment they meet each other. After meeting, they getting married a week later. I really liked this story and found it super interesting that they had a whole relationship without ever meeting each other before. It is unfortunate that Harry had to get rid of some of Normas letters because he couldn’t carrying that much. So we only got his side of the story for most of it.
The second day of class this week we focused on letters between one couple (Chris and Bessie). The Readings we listen to were from the book “My Dear Bessie.” It was very similar to the couple that wrote letters to each other up above. Although he asked to marry her after 7 months. After listening to the readings. We talked about our next letter we are going to write. We pick a person who was nominated by family or friends, that could use a love letter to help get them through a rough time. We find the person through a person that created a website based off of her writing love letters and hiding them around the city. People were a really big fan of her idea and asked if she could write them a love letter. It turned in to a lot of people who wanted love letter, which started her website called “The World Needs More Love Letters.” I think her ides was really sweet and thoughtful, and it lifts people up when they are low. I am excited to write my letter to a stranger who needs a small pick me up.
